GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring content so AI engines cite you as a source when they answer user queries. Four engines matter in 2026: Google AI Mode / AI Overviews, ChatGPT (SearchGPT mode), Perplexity, and Gemini. Each weighs citation signals differently. A GEO strategy that works for Google AI Overviews can fail completely for Perplexity. Here's the per-engine playbook.
Google AI Mode cites pages already ranking top-10 and filters by schema + author entity. ChatGPT (SearchGPT) cites fresh, well-structured content with heavy Reddit/Wikipedia bias. Perplexity cites Wikipedia, Reddit, news domains, and sites with high author-entity signals. Gemini overlaps Google AI Mode but weighs YouTube transcripts heavier. One cross-engine strategy: ship FAQ schema + Author schema + answer-first content + fresh timestamps + topical silo depth. That covers 70% of citation signals across all four engines.
GEO vs SEO — how they differ in practice
Classical SEO optimizes for rank position: get to position 1 and win the click. GEO optimizes for citation share: get your URL embedded as a source inside the AI answer that replaces the SERP.
The two aren't mutually exclusive — in fact, GEO depends on SEO. Every AI engine except Perplexity requires your page to already be ranking on the open web before it becomes eligible for citation. SEO is still the entry fee; GEO is how you win the citation slot on top of ranking.
The economic difference matters: a classical SERP click goes to one site at a time. An AI citation can send traffic to 2-5 sites simultaneously (every citation in the AI answer is clickable). Click-through rates on AI citations are 4-8x higher than classical organic because the user has already been pre-sold by the AI's reference to your source.
Engine 1: Google AI Overviews / AI Mode
The dominant engine by query volume. Google rolled AI Overviews to US desktop + mobile in May 2024, expanded to AI Mode (separate tab) in May 2025, and now shows AI-generated answers for ~24% of all searches as of mid-2026.
Primary signals Google AI uses to pick citations:
- Page ranks in top 10 for the exact query (entry requirement)
- FAQ, HowTo, Article schema present
- Author entity with Person schema + credentials
- Freshness (lastmod + visible date within 90-180 days for most topics)
- Answer-first paragraph structure (first 100 words of main body)
- Topical silo depth (5+ related pages on the domain)

Engine 2: ChatGPT (SearchGPT mode)
OpenAI's SearchGPT (now default in ChatGPT with 'Search' mode) uses a hybrid of their own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) plus a Microsoft Bing index deal. Citations in ChatGPT responses skew heavily toward Reddit (OpenAI's content licensing deal), Wikipedia, major news domains (NYT, WSJ, BBC), and sites with high entity authority.
Primary signals ChatGPT uses:
- Freshness is king — ChatGPT penalizes content older than 60 days for most non-evergreen topics
- Reddit discussions mentioning your brand — ChatGPT frequently cites Reddit threads as primary sources, and threads mentioning your business get indirect citation share
- Clean HTML without heavy JavaScript rendering — OAI-SearchBot has limited JS rendering, pages that require JS to show content get skipped
- Allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt — blocking it means zero ChatGPT citations
- Explicit author bylines with real-looking names (SearchGPT's authorship scoring is less rigorous than Google's but still filters out pages with no byline)
Tactical move: add User-agent: OAI-SearchBot + Allow: / to your robots.txt. Many sites inadvertently block it by using a wildcard-block-then-allow-specific-bots pattern.
Engine 3: Perplexity
Perplexity's citation model is the most transparent and the most consistent — every answer shows numbered citations with source previews. Their indexing favors established news domains, Wikipedia, Reddit threads, GitHub discussions, and sites with high domain authority.
Primary signals Perplexity uses:
- Domain authority / backlink profile — Perplexity's citation picker is heavily backlink-weighted. New sites struggle to earn citations even with great content.
- Mention in Wikipedia — Wikipedia articles that cite your brand/site create a strong Perplexity signal
- Reddit mentions in top threads — same mechanism as ChatGPT
- Direct answers in first paragraphs — Perplexity pulls short, declarative sentences as citation snippets
- No schema requirement — Perplexity doesn't appear to weight structured data heavily; its crawler is content-focused
Perplexity is the hardest engine for new sites. Compensate with Reddit + Wikipedia mentions rather than schema optimization.
Engine 4: Gemini (Google AI assistant)
Gemini overlaps substantially with Google AI Mode signals but with two differences: (1) heavier weight on YouTube transcripts and videos cited as sources, (2) stronger Google Knowledge Graph integration — entities already in Google's Knowledge Graph get preferential citation treatment.
Primary signals Gemini uses:
- All Google AI Mode signals (schema, author, freshness, top-10 ranking)
- YouTube presence — if your brand has a YouTube channel with content on the topic, Gemini is more likely to cite your associated website
- Google Knowledge Graph entity — if your business has a Knowledge Graph panel in Google search, you're far more likely to be cited in Gemini
- Local Business schema for geo-specific queries — Gemini uses GBP + LocalBusiness schema to answer location queries
Tactic: create a short-form YouTube channel for your business and link it in Organization schema (sameAs array). This creates a cross-platform entity signal.
The cross-engine strategy that works for all 4
Rather than optimize for each engine separately, ship one content baseline that covers 70% of citation signals across all four:
- Schema stack: Article + FAQ + HowTo (where applicable) + Author/Person + Organization. Publisher must reference a canonical Organization @id across every page.
- Answer-first main body: First 100 words after the H1 contain a self-contained, declarative answer to the query.
- Visible publish + update dates on every article/service page.
- Quarterly content refresh workflow — bump lastmod + rewrite 2-3 sentences every 90 days.
- Author bylines with Person schema and visible credentials (job title, organization, link to full bio).
- Topical silo depth — minimum 5 supporting articles per primary topic, interlinked per Non-Local SEO SOP §6 linking rules.
- robots.txt that allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and ClaudeBot explicitly — don't rely on wildcard allows.
- Reddit + Wikipedia presence — organic mentions where appropriate (never buy/plant them, which gets you banned from both platforms).
Entity-first content strategy
AI engines operate on an entity graph, not a keyword graph. If your content refers to the same entity by three different names across your domain, the entity resolver treats them as potentially-different entities and discounts your topical authority.
Tactical rules for entity consistency:
- Pick one canonical name for your organization and use it identically everywhere (visible content + schema).
- Use the
@idpattern for Organization and Person schema (https://yoursite.com/#organization,https://yoursite.com/#founder) so every page references the same entity. - Add
sameAslinks in Organization schema pointing to your LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, Wikipedia (if applicable), YouTube, and other verifiable profiles. - Use consistent entity references in body text — "Key Rank Strategies" not "KRS" in content designed for AI citation, since the AI scores exact name mentions.
Tracking GEO performance
AI citation tracking is still immature as a tooling category. Three usable options as of 2026:
- Profound ($$$, enterprise) — tracks brand mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews. Expensive but the most comprehensive.
- Peec AI (mid-tier) — focused on competitor benchmarking in AI responses.
- Manual query sampling (free) — run your top 20 target queries through each engine weekly, note which URLs are cited, log in a spreadsheet. Boring but accurate.
For most sites, manual sampling once per month is sufficient to spot trends. Tool subscriptions make sense once you're generating meaningful AI-driven traffic (10K+ sessions/month attributable to AI referrers).
FAQ
Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?
Blocking crawlers means zero citations from that engine, which means zero traffic from that engine's users. For most sites, this trades a hypothetical IP concern (your content training future models) for a concrete traffic loss (no citations). Only block if your legal or brand strategy explicitly requires it.
Do nofollow links affect AI citations?
No — AI engines don't appear to weight nofollow attributes when scoring citation eligibility. The link itself (presence of your URL in a reputable site's content) is the signal regardless of nofollow status.
Is schema markup required for AI citations?
Required for Google AI Overviews and Gemini. Strongly beneficial for ChatGPT. Minimal impact on Perplexity. If you ship one schema stack across all pages, you cover the engines that need it.
How often does AI citation data update?
Varies by engine. Google AI Mode cites pages that are currently in its top-10 ranking for the query — citation changes as soon as rankings change (same day). Perplexity's citation freshness is roughly 24-72 hours after re-crawl. ChatGPT's SearchGPT mode uses Bing's index, which refreshes most pages weekly.
