SEO consultants typically charge by the hour, by the project, or with a monthly retainer, and in the largest published pricing poll we found, the most common consultant rate was $100 to $150 an hour. The price depends on how much of the work they do versus advise on. Before comparing numbers, it helps to know what a consultant actually does, because many owners are really pricing a full SEO agency. This guide covers both, plus whether you can do SEO yourself.
SEO consultants most often charge $100 to $150 an hour, $2,501 to $5,000 a month on retainer, or $5,001 to $10,000 per project, according to Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers. These are survey figures, not our prices. A consultant reviews your strategy, tells your team what to fix and in what order, and checks the work. You can do basic SEO yourself. You can also do some SEO without a website, through your Google Business Profile, but it caps how far you can grow.
What does an SEO consultant do?
An SEO consultant diagnoses what is holding your rankings back and tells you what to do about it, in priority order. In most consulting arrangements, your team or your developer does the work and the consultant guides and reviews it.
A typical engagement includes:
- A strategy audit: a review of your technical setup, content, links and local presence, covering what works, what wastes time and what is missing.
- Prioritized opportunities: fixes ranked by impact and effort so your team starts with the biggest wins.
- A roadmap: often 90 days, with each task given an owner and a way to measure it.
- Training: teaching staff to handle keyword research, content or Google Business Profile updates.
- Ongoing advice: regular calls and reviews of the team's work.
- Agency oversight: checking whether an existing agency is delivering what you pay for.
That is the model our Costa Mesa SEO consultants work in. If you are deciding between a consultant and an agency that does everything, our comparison of SEO agencies and SEO consultants goes through the trade-offs.
How much do SEO specialists charge?
Most SEO specialists charge between $75 and $200 an hour, with consultants toward the upper end. In Ahrefs' SEO pricing poll of 439 people (page last updated in August 2024), 47% of respondents charge $75 to $200 an hour, and the most common rate for consultants is $100 to $150. Ahrefs does not say when the responses were collected, and the figures cover providers worldwide unless noted. They are not our prices.
- Hourly: among US and Canada respondents in the Ahrefs poll, 66.7% charge $75 to $200 an hour. A newer SE Ranking pricing survey of 260 agencies, published in December 2024, found 40% of US and Canadian agencies charge more than $125 an hour.
- Experience: in the Ahrefs data, average hourly rates rise from $73.05 for providers in business two years or less to $118.35 for those in business more than 10 years.
- Monthly retainers: 78.2% of the SEOs Ahrefs polled charge a monthly retainer. The most common retainer for consultants is $2,501 to $5,000 a month, while for agencies it is $500 to $1,000.
- One-time projects: the most common per-project fee for consultants is $5,001 to $10,000. Across all respondents, it is $2,501 to $5,000.
- Training workshops: usually priced per half-day or full day.
Ask whether a retainer covers advice only or hands-on work as well, since that changes what you are paying for.
Our own consulting is priced the same way the market is structured: one-time strategy audits are a flat fee, monthly advisory is a retainer, and we quote both based on your scope. For context on what full-service SEO costs, see how much SEO costs.
Very cheap offers deserve a careful look. A bargain monthly SEO package rarely includes the strategy or hands-on work a real consultant provides. Ask exactly what you get each month and how results will be measured.
Demand for consulting is small next to demand for full-service help. In Google Ads data for Orange County, "seo consultant orange county" gets about 30 searches a month, while "orange county seo company" gets about 320. Most owners want someone to do it all. Consulting suits businesses that already have people doing the work.
Can I do SEO on my own?
Yes. Many small businesses handle the basics themselves, and the most important local tasks do not need special skills. What they need is time and consistency.
Things an owner can do without help:
- Fill out every section of your Google Business Profile and pick the right primary category. Our guide to improving your Google Business Profile walks through it.
- Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to all of them.
- Write a clear title and description for each page, with the service and city in plain words.
- Create one page per core service, with real detail, prices where you can share them, and photos.
- Keep your name, address and phone number the same on every directory.
- Check Google Search Console monthly to see what you show up for.
It is worth paying when you have done the basics and rankings have stalled, when competitors are clearly investing, when technical problems are beyond you, or when your time is worth more running the business. A consultant is a good middle option if you have staff who can do the work but need direction, which is exactly where SEO consulting in Orange County fits. Our local SEO guide for Costa Mesa businesses covers the full do-it-yourself process.
Can SEO be done without a website?
Partly. You can rank in Google's map pack with only a Google Business Profile, because the map pack is driven by your profile, reviews and distance from the searcher. Directory listings like Yelp, Apple Maps and Bing Places also help people find you.
The limits show up quickly. Without a website you cannot rank in the regular results below the map, you have no place for service detail or pricing, and Google has less information to judge how relevant you are. A website also gives your profile a page to link to, and it is where many customers go next: BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults found that 54% of consumers check a business's website after reading positive reviews. For most businesses, a simple site with a page per service is the point where SEO starts to compound.
