PPC management typically costs a monthly fee on top of what you pay Google or Meta for clicks. Agencies charge that fee as a flat amount, a percentage of your ad spend, or a mix of both. The right budget depends on what clicks cost in your industry, which in Orange County is not cheap. Here is what management covers, how pricing usually works, and how far a small daily budget goes.
PPC management costs a monthly management fee plus your ad spend, which you pay to Google or Meta. Agencies charge that fee as a flat amount, a percentage of ad spend or a mix, and we found no published survey of those fees with a stated sample, so compare written quotes. The ad spend is easier to benchmark: LocaliQ's 2026 data puts the average search ad click at $5.42 and the average lead at $66.69. PPC is a legitimate, measurable channel when tracking is set up. $20 a day is a test budget in Orange County, not a growth budget, because the local keywords we checked cost $9.59 to $43.57 per click.
What is PPC management?
PPC (pay-per-click) management is the work of setting up, running and improving ad campaigns where you pay each time someone clicks, mainly on Google Ads and Meta. It covers conversion tracking, keyword and audience choices, bids and budgets, ad copy, landing pages and reporting.
The setup is the easy part. Most of the value comes from weekly work: reading the search terms report, adding negative keywords so you stop paying for irrelevant searches, testing new ads, and moving budget toward what produces leads. Accounts that are set up and left alone tend to waste more money each month.
How much does PPC management typically cost?
PPC management costs whatever fee the agency sets for running the account, plus the ad spend you pay the platform. The fee is set in one of a few ways. We have not found a published survey of PPC management fees with a stated sample size, so treat any single industry range you read with caution and get every quote in writing.
- Flat monthly fee: a set amount regardless of spend. The price usually depends on how many campaigns and platforms are involved.
- Percentage of ad spend: the fee rises and falls with your budget, usually with a monthly minimum.
- Hybrid: a base fee plus a smaller percentage above a spend threshold.
- Setup fee: some agencies charge a one-time fee for the account audit, tracking and campaign build.
Then add the ad spend itself, which goes to Google or Meta. Clicks in Orange County are expensive. In Google Ads Keyword Planner data for the county, "web designer orange county" costs about $43.57 per click, "orange county seo company" about $30.45 and "web design costa mesa" about $9.59. Your industry will differ, but those numbers show why budget matters. For a national comparison, the 2026 search advertising benchmarks from LocaliQ and WordStream, based on thousands of client campaigns on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, put the average cost per click across industries at $5.42 and the average cost per lead at $66.69. Home and home improvement businesses averaged $8.33 per click and $90.92 per lead.
Our own model is a flat monthly management fee with your ad spend paid to Google or Meta at cost. We do not take a percentage of spend, so there is no reason for us to push your budget up. We work with ad budgets starting at $2,000 a month, because below that, management fees take too large a share. What does a PPC agency do?
A PPC agency builds and runs your ad campaigns and is accountable for what each lead costs. A good one spends most of its time on tracking, waste reduction and testing, not just launching ads.
- Fixes tracking first: Google Tag Manager, GA4, call tracking and form tracking, so every lead is counted.
- Audits the account: finds spend on irrelevant searches, overlapping campaigns and broken settings.
- Builds campaigns: search, Performance Max, YouTube or Meta, depending on where your customers are.
- Manages keywords and bids: adds negatives weekly and adjusts bids and budgets toward what converts.
- Writes and tests ads: new headlines and creative on a regular schedule.
- Improves landing pages: sends clicks to pages built to convert, not your home page.
- Reports in plain terms: cost per lead, cost per sale, return on ad spend and what changes next.
Some local service businesses also qualify for Local Services Ads, which charge per lead instead of per click. Our comparison of Local Services Ads and Google Ads explains how they differ and when to run both.
Is PPC legitimate, and is it worth it?
Yes, PPC is legitimate. You pay the platform only for clicks (or leads, with Local Services Ads), and with tracking in place you can see exactly what each lead costs. Whether it is worth it depends on simple math: what a customer is worth to you versus what a lead costs.
A quick way to check: take your average job value and your close rate, then work out the most you could pay per lead and still profit. If a new customer is worth $2,000 and you close 1 in 4 leads, you could pay up to $500 per lead before losing money on the first job alone. If the expected cost per lead in your market is well below that, PPC is likely worth testing. The LocaliQ averages above give you a starting estimate until your own account has data.
PPC tends to disappoint when tracking is missing, when ads send people to a weak page, or when the budget is too thin to learn anything. It also stops the moment you stop paying, which is why many businesses pair it with SEO and a strong Google Business Profile that keep bringing calls without a per-click cost.
Is $20 a day good for Google Ads?
$20 a day is enough to test Google Ads in a narrow service area, but it is a small budget for Orange County. According to Google Ads Help on average daily budgets, you will spend no more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month, so $20 a day is at most about $608 a month.
At the Orange County click costs above, that buys roughly 63 clicks a month at $9.59, or about 14 clicks at $43.57. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average search ad conversion rate at 8.18%, which would turn those clicks into roughly 1 to 5 leads a month. That can work for a high-value service, but it leaves little room to test ads or keywords.
If you start at $20 a day, make it count:
- Run search campaigns only, on your highest-intent keywords.
- Use phrase and exact match, and add negative keywords from day one.
- Target a tight area, such as Costa Mesa plus Newport Beach, rather than all of Orange County.
- Run ads during the hours you can answer the phone.
- Set up conversion tracking before spending anything.
At that budget, running the account yourself usually makes more sense than paying a management fee. Once spend reaches a level where waste costs more than management, hiring a Costa Mesa PPC agency starts to pay. Our national ads management service covers Google, Meta and YouTube.
