If you work from home, drive to your customers and don't have a storefront, you can still get on Google Maps. Google lets you create a Business Profile as a service-area business: you verify with your real home address, hide that address from the public, and list the cities you serve. What you can't do is rent a fake office to look bigger.
Yes. If you travel to customers, set up a Google Business Profile as a service-area business. Verify at your home address, turn off "Show business address", and add up to 20 cities or ZIP codes. Never use a virtual office or mailbox. Expect to rank best near home, and use pages and ads to reach farther.
Am I allowed on Google Maps without a storefront?
Yes, as long as you meet customers in person. Google's Business Profile guidelines say that if your business doesn't have a storefront with clear signage but travels to customers at their locations, you're allowed one service-area Business Profile.
- Eligible: plumbers, house cleaners, pool techs, mobile detailers, handymen, dog groomers who drive to you, private investigators, photographers who shoot on location, tutors who go to the student's home.
- Eligible as a storefront: a home office where clients come to you, if it's staffed during the hours you list. A home salon or a tax preparer who meets clients at the house can show the address.
- Not eligible: a business that is 100% online and never meets anyone in person. Use a website and other channels instead.
- Special case: Google says businesses tied to age-restricted products like alcohol, cannabis or weapons can't be service-area businesses without a storefront.
Most home-based owners are not on Google at all yet. BrightLocal's SMB Marketing Report 2025 found only 35% of small and medium businesses have a Google Business Profile, so simply setting one up correctly puts you ahead of many local competitors.
Will my home address show up on the map?
No, not if you hide it. Google's guidelines give this exact example: if you're a plumber and run your business from your residential address, clear the address from your Business Profile. Your profile then shows a shaded service area instead of a pin on your house.
You still enter the home address during setup, because Google needs a real location to verify you and to know where you're based. Customers just never see it. If your street address changes later, read our guide on what to do when you move and Google calls drop before you edit anything.
How do I set it up step by step?
It takes about an hour of setup, then up to a few days to verify. Do it from the Google account you'll keep for the business, not a crew member's account.
- Create or claim the profile at business.google.com. Use your real business name, exactly as it's written on your truck, invoices and website. Don't add cities or keywords to the name.
- Pick the most specific primary category. "Pool cleaning service" beats "Contractor". Add a few secondary categories that describe what you are, not every service you sell.
- Enter your home address, then turn off "Show business address to customers". Google's address help says to only hide your address if you are a service-area business.
- Add your service areas. Google's service area help page allows up to 20 service areas by city, postal code or other area, and says the overall area shouldn't be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where you're based. Edits can take up to 48 hours to show.
- Add a phone number you answer, your hours, your website and a list of services with plain descriptions.
- Verify. Google picks the method. Google recommends video verification when it is offered. For a home business, show your work vehicle with branding, your tools and equipment, and something that proves you run the business, like an invoice or license. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days.
- Add real photos of finished jobs, your vehicle and your team, then ask your last 10 happy customers for a review.
Don't edit your name, address or category while a verification is pending. Google's verification help warns that editing those during postcard verification makes the code stop working.
Can I use a UPS box, virtual office or coworking desk instead?
No. That is the fastest way to get a profile suspended. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes and mailboxes at remote locations aren't acceptable, and that a rented mailing address where you don't actually operate, a virtual office, isn't eligible.
| Address you might use | Allowed? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Your home, hidden, with service areas | Yes | The correct setup for most home-based trades and services |
| Your home, shown publicly | Only if customers come to you during stated hours | Fine for a home salon or office that receives clients |
| UPS Store or mailbox | No | Risk of suspension, and the profile can be removed |
| Virtual office you don't work from | No | Same risk as a mailbox |
| Coworking desk | Only with clear signage, staff and customers received during business hours | Rarely qualifies for a one-person business |
| A friend's shop in a better city | No | Misrepresents your location, same suspension risk |
If your profile has already been suspended over an address, fix the address first, then request reinstatement from inside the profile with proof the business is real.
Will I rank as well as businesses with a storefront?
You can rank well near where you're based, but you won't rank everywhere in your service area. Hiding your address doesn't stop Google from using it. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and distance is measured from your verified location.
- In Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local search experts, "Proximity of Address to the Point of Search" ranked number 2 of all local pack and Maps factors, and "Physical Address in City of Search" ranked number 4.
- The same survey ranked "Address Is Showing on GBP (Not SAB)" number 7, so experts believe showing an address helps a little. That is not a reason to show your home address if customers don't come there. It's a rule violation, and the ranking gain isn't worth a suspension.
- Listing 20 cities doesn't make you rank in 20 cities. The service area tells customers where you work. Rankings far from home come from reviews, a strong website and city pages.
Our step-by-step guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps covers the factors you can control: category, reviews, service pages and local links.
Is it worth the effort for a one-person business?
Usually yes, because the profile is free and the calls it brings are people ready to book. Here is a worked example for a home-based house cleaner. The numbers are made-up assumptions to show the math, not a client result.
| Step | Example assumption | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Profile views a month (from your Performance report) | 400 | 400 views |
| Share who call or message | 5% | 20 contacts |
| Share you book | 40% | 8 new customers |
| First job value | $180 | $1,440 |
| Share who become every-other-week regulars | 25% | 2 recurring customers |
| Value of those 2 regulars over a year (26 visits x $180) | about $9,360 |
Your own numbers are in the profile once it's verified. Google's Performance report shows views, the search terms people used, calls (taps on the call button), website clicks and messages. Check it monthly, not daily.
What should I do this week?
You don't need an agency to get on the map. A home-based owner can do every step below in a week, for free.
- Search Google for your business name. If a profile already exists, claim it instead of making a second one.
- Set up or fix the profile using the steps above, with your address hidden and 5 to 15 service areas you actually drive to.
- Make your name, phone number and website match everywhere: Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing, Nextdoor and your website footer.
- Put a page on your website for each main service, and mention the cities you serve in plain sentences.
- Text a review link to every customer from the last 90 days. Recent reviews matter: BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 74% of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months.
- Post one photo of a finished job a week.
A new profile with zero reviews can take a few months to bring steady calls. Keep doing referrals, neighborhood groups and repeat-customer asks while it builds up.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my home address for my Google Business Profile?
Yes. Enter your real home address to verify, then turn off "Show business address to customers" if customers don't come to your house. Google uses the address to locate you but doesn't display it.
Will customers see my house on Google Maps?
Not if you hide the address. Your profile shows a shaded service area made of the cities or ZIP codes you choose instead of a pin on your home.
How many cities can I add as service areas?
Google allows up to 20 service areas by city, ZIP code or other area. Google says the overall area shouldn't extend more than about 2 hours of driving time from where you're based.
Can I get a Google Business Profile with a P.O. box or UPS Store address?
No. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes, remote mailboxes and virtual offices you don't operate from aren't eligible, and using one risks suspension.
Why do I only show up on Maps near my house?
Distance from the searcher is one of Google's main local ranking factors, and it's measured from your verified address even when it's hidden. Reviews, service pages on your website and local links help you show up farther out.
How do I verify a home-based business with no signage?
Google chooses the method and recommends video when it is offered. Show your branded vehicle, tools or equipment, and a business document like an invoice or license so Google can see the business is real.
