A Google Business Profile for local SEO is the biggest lever most local businesses have over where they show in Google Maps and the three-pack. But only some fields affect ranking, while others mostly help a searcher choose you once you show up. This guide separates the two, field by field, using Google's own documentation and the largest expert survey on local ranking.

TL;DR

Your primary category, your real business name, your address and map pin, your additional categories and your Google reviews do most of the ranking work in a Google Business Profile. Hours, services and completeness help at the margin. Posts, photo counts and keywords in the description barely move rankings, but they help people pick you.

How does Google decide which Business Profiles rank?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Every profile field you control feeds one of those three, except distance, which depends on where the searcher is standing.

Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. That rules out ads as a ranking shortcut. It also means the profile, your website and your reputation are the whole game.

Which Google Business Profile fields affect local rankings most?

Category, name, location and reviews matter most, by a wide margin. Google doesn't publish weights, so the best outside evidence is the Whitespark 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report, in which 47 local search experts scored 187 factors for their impact on the local pack and Maps.

The table below lists the main profile fields, where each one landed in that survey's local pack ranking, and what we see in practice.

Profile fieldWhitespark 2026 local pack rank (of 187)Ranking impact
Primary category#1Highest. Decides which searches you are eligible for.
Business name (keywords in name)#3High, but only your real name is allowed.
Address in the city of search#4High. You can't change it without moving.
Hours (open at time of search)#5High for searches made outside your hours.
Google star rating (4 to 5)#6High.
Additional categories#8High for related searches.
Number of Google reviews with text#9High, and it keeps compounding.
Map pin placement#10High. A wrong pin can cap where you rank.
Profile completeness#16Medium. Breaks ties between close competitors.
Predefined services#22Medium.
Number of photos#96Low for ranking, high for clicks and calls.
Number of Google posts#168Very low for ranking.
Keywords in the description#171Very low for ranking. Write it for customers.

Distance from the searcher came in at #2, right behind primary category. It is the one top factor you can't edit, which is why the rest of the list matters so much.

Why is the primary category the most important setting?

Your primary category tells Google what kind of business you are, and Google uses it to decide which searches you can appear for at all. Get it wrong and the rest of the profile can't fully make up for it.

The same Whitespark survey ranked an incorrect primary category #2 among negative ranking factors, behind only being marked permanently closed. That makes it both the best fix and the most expensive mistake on the profile.

Does the business name affect local SEO?

Yes. Keywords in the business name ranked #3 in the survey, but that only helps if the keyword is part of your real name. Adding keywords that aren't on your sign is against the rules.

Google's guidelines for representing your business say your name should match your real-world name as used on your storefront, website and stationery, and that unnecessary information in the name can lead to suspension. Whitespark's experts listed keyword stuffing in the business name #8 among suspension risk factors.

If you're choosing a name for a new business, a descriptive one helps. For an existing business, adding "Best Plumber Irvine" to the profile is a risk that isn't worth taking.

How much do location and the map pin matter?

A lot, and it shows clearly in Orange County. Having a physical address in the city being searched ranked #4, and proper pin placement ranked #10, so a business usually ranks strongest close to its verified location.

To reach further than your own city, you need stronger prominence: more reviews, local links and dedicated city pages on your website. Our local SEO guide for small businesses covers the off-profile side.

How do reviews affect Google Business Profile SEO?

Reviews feed prominence directly. Star rating (#6), the number of reviews with text (#9) and how recent your reviews are (#11) all ranked in the survey's top 11, and a steady flow of reviews over time (#14) ranked above a sudden burst.

The numbers you need are often smaller than people expect. When we checked the map pack for Costa Mesa marketing agencies on October 28, 2026, the top three had between 13 and 42 reviews. For Huntington Beach house cleaners the range was 18 to 183, so the bar depends heavily on your industry.

Reviews also matter beyond Google rankings. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found Google is still the top site consumers use for reviews, at 71%, down from 83% in 2025. Our guide to getting and managing Google Business Profile reviews covers asking, replying and staying inside Google's rules.

Do posts, photos and the description help you rank?

Not much. In the Whitespark survey, the number of Google posts ranked #168, keywords in the description ranked #171, and geo-tagged photos ranked last at #187 out of 187. These fields help conversions far more than rankings.

These still deserve some time. Showing up is only half the job; the profile also has to win the click.

What part of local SEO happens outside the profile?

The website linked from your profile carries real weight. Several of the survey's top 25 local pack factors are about that site, not the profile itself.

Link the profile to the page that best matches your primary category, not automatically to the homepage. If you need to change the website link or other fields, our walkthrough on how to edit a Google Business Profile shows where each setting lives.

Where should you start if your profile isn't ranking?

Start at the top of the table and work down. Most profiles that don't rank have a problem in the first five rows, not the last five.

  1. Confirm the primary category is the most specific accurate match.
  2. Check the business name matches your sign and website exactly.
  3. Check the pin, address or service area, and your hours.
  4. Add the additional categories and predefined services that apply.
  5. Set up a steady review request routine.
  6. Line up the linked web page with the profile.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile part of local SEO?

Yes. It is the main source Google uses for local pack and Maps results, so for most local businesses it is the most important part of local SEO. Your website, reviews and citations support it.

What is the most important Google Business Profile ranking factor?

Your primary category. Experts in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey ranked it first for local pack rankings, just ahead of the searcher's distance from your business.

Can I add keywords to my business name on Google?

Only if they are part of your real business name as shown on your sign and website. Google's guidelines say adding unnecessary information to the name can lead to suspension.

Do Google posts help local SEO?

Very little for ranking. Experts ranked the number of Google posts near the bottom of 187 factors, but a weekly post can still help a searcher choose you.

Does a Google Business Profile help organic search results too?

Indirectly. The profile mainly drives the map pack and Maps, while regular organic results depend more on your website. Reviews and brand searches can help both.
