Most SEO packages cost between $500 and $5,000 a month, and local SEO packages sit near the bottom of that range. The price tells you roughly how many hours of work you are buying, but the scope matters more. This guide shows what published surveys say each price level includes, the red flags in cheap packages, and the parts worth paying for.

TL;DR

SEO packages usually cost $500 to $5,000 a month; Ahrefs found 63% of businesses spend in that range and local SEO averages $1,557 a month. Under $500 buys monitoring and basic fixes, while $1,000 to $2,000 buys real local work: profile, content, citations, reviews and links. Pay for work you can verify in your own Search Console, not for reports.

How much do SEO packages cost?

SEO packages typically cost $500 to $5,000 a month, with local packages averaging around $1,500. The two largest public pricing surveys agree on the shape of the market, even though their exact numbers differ.

These are survey figures, not quotes. For a full breakdown of pricing models (retainer, hourly and per project), see our guide on how much SEO costs in 2026.

What's included in SEO packages at each price level?

Each price level buys a different amount of hands-on work each month. The share of agencies at each level comes from SE Ranking's 2024 survey; the scope column is what we typically see in packages at that price.

Monthly priceShare of agencies (SE Ranking, 2024)What's typically included
Under $50030%Rank tracking, an automated report, basic Google Business Profile updates, a few on-page fixes. Little or no new content or links.
$500 to $1,00034%The above, plus profile optimization, citation cleanup, review replies and a small amount of content. Often one person doing everything.
$1,000 to $2,00020%Full local SEO: service and city pages, a review request system, technical fixes, local links. This band holds the Ahrefs local average of $1,557.
$2,000 to $5,00013%Multiple locations or competitive markets: more content each month, active link building, conversion tracking and strategy calls.
Over $5,0002%National or multi-location campaigns, larger content teams, digital PR, custom reporting.

US agencies tend to sit higher in this table than agencies in Europe or India, so expect US quotes toward the upper rows. If you want a number for your own situation, our SEO cost calculator estimates a budget from your market and number of locations.

How are local SEO packages different from national SEO packages?

Local SEO packages focus on the map pack and city searches, so they need less content and fewer links than national campaigns, which is why they cost less. In the Ahrefs poll, providers serving worldwide markets charge well over double what local providers charge.

A local SEO package should include:

Our local SEO services pricing breakdown lists what each local tier should deliver, and the local SEO guide for small businesses covers the work itself.

What are the red flags in cheap SEO packages?

The biggest red flag is a package that promises results it can't afford to deliver. At under $500 a month, there is room for a few hours of work at most. Credo's SEO pricing survey (updated 2022) put the average US SEO agency rate at $147.93 an hour, so a $300 package buys about two hours at that rate.

Cheap is not always bad. A low-cost package can work in a small town with little competition. Our guide to low-cost SEO services explains when a budget option makes sense and what to cut first.

Why is SEO so expensive?

SEO is expensive because the work is skilled labor that compounds over months, not a one-time setup. Most of the price is people's time: research, writing, technical fixes and outreach for links.

Compare that to paid search. "Orange County SEO company" gets about 590 searches a month and costs $30.45 per click on Google Ads (our Google Ads data, October 2026). A $1,000 package equals roughly 33 paid clicks, and those clicks stop the day you stop paying.

What is worth paying for in an SEO package?

Pay for work that produces something you can see: new pages, fixed errors, earned links and more calls. Skip anything you can't check.

  1. An audit that ends in a fix list: technical errors, missing pages and profile gaps, ranked by impact.
  2. New content each month: service and city pages that answer what customers search.
  3. Google Business Profile management: for local businesses, often the fastest place to see movement.
  4. Real links: a handful of relevant local or industry links beats hundreds of random ones.
  5. Reporting from your own accounts: Google Search Console, Business Profile and call tracking, not a vendor's dashboard.
  6. A short commitment: month-to-month after an initial setup period.

One onboarding note: Credo's survey found only 16.7% of SEO providers charge an onboarding fee, so a large setup fee on top of the monthly price is worth questioning.

How do you compare SEO pricing packages side by side?

Put every quote into the same format before you compare prices. Ask each provider to answer these in writing:

A $1,500 package that answers all six clearly is usually a better buy than a $700 package that answers none of them.

What do our SEO packages cost?

Our engagements start at $800 a month for single-location local work and scale to $5,000 a month for competitive multi-vertical campaigns. The first 30 days ("Core 30") cover the technical audit, Search Console setup, content gap analysis and Local SEO foundation, then we go month-to-month.

Our SEO work carries a written guarantee: if we have not produced measurable ranking movement in 90 days, visible in your own Google Search Console, you get your money back. For Serene Pools, an Anaheim pool contractor, that work produced 1.03 million Google impressions and a top-5 map pack position in 6 months. If you are comparing quotes from an Orange County SEO company or anyone else, start with a free SEO audit so you know what your site actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

How much do SEO services typically cost?

Most businesses spend $500 to $5,000 a month on SEO services, according to Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers. Local SEO averages about $1,557 a month in the same poll.

What is the 80/20 rule for SEO?

It means a small share of your work drives most of your results. For a local business that usually means your Google Business Profile, your main service pages and your reviews, so fix those before anything else.

Can I do my own SEO for my business?

Yes, you can handle the basics yourself: complete your Google Business Profile, ask every customer for a review and write a clear page for each service. Hire help when you compete in a crowded market or run out of time.

Is SEO replaced by AI?

No. AI search tools still draw on websites, business profiles and reviews, so the same SEO work feeds them. SEO is changing with AI search, not going away.

Should I sign a 12-month SEO contract?

Only if the contract has a clear performance clause and a way out. A short setup period followed by month-to-month terms keeps the agency accountable.
