AI Search Optimization (GEO) — the real numbers

GEO is not "SEO but with more AI buzzwords." It's a measurable practice with real data behind it. 92% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 ranking pages — meaning classic SEO is still the foundation. But 47% of citations come from pages ranking below position 5, meaning AI has different selection logic than classic Google. And on ChatGPT, 47.9% of citations come from Wikipedia and 11.3% from Reddit. On Perplexity, 46.7% of citations come from Reddit. Different surface, different citation source distribution, different strategy.

The single most correlated signal with AI visibility is brand mentions across YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, and LinkedIn — 3× stronger correlation than backlinks (Ahrefs, 75,000-brand study, December 2025). If your business isn't being talked about on those four platforms, you won't be cited by AI systems no matter how good your on-page SEO is.

WHAT'S INCLUDED
  • Passage-level citability scoring: optimal 134-167 word answer blocks per Google's AI Optimization Guide
  • Question-based H2/H3 architecture matching AI query patterns ("How do I…" "What is…" "Why does…")
  • AI crawler access audit: robots.txt review for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended
  • llms.txt implementation for non-Google AI systems (Google Search ignores llms.txt — we tell you that honestly)
  • Brand mention strategy across YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, LinkedIn (the 4 surfaces that correlate with AI visibility)
  • AI Overview presence tracking: which of your priority queries trigger AIO, and whether you're being cited
  • Schema markup for AI discoverability: Article, Organization, Person, FAQPage, MedicalProcedure, HowTo
  • Content refresh cadence: recency correlates 3× with AI citation — quarterly refreshes on all top-cited pages
Typical outcome: measurable AI Overview citation frequency on 20-40% of tracked priority queries within 90 days.

Process — how the engagement runs

Five steps from onboarding to first ranking win. Same for every client.

STEP 01

AI visibility baseline

Query your priority keyword set in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT web search, and Perplexity. Document whether you're cited today. Establish the baseline.

STEP 02

Citability audit

Score your existing content on the 5-factor GEO framework: citability, structural readability, multi-modal content, authority signals, technical accessibility.

STEP 03

Quick wins deploy

Front-30% direct answers, question-based H2s, FAQPage schema, AI crawler access. Ships in weeks 1-3.

STEP 04

Brand mention campaign

Coordinated push on YouTube (video content), Reddit (topic-authoritative comments/AMAs), LinkedIn (thought leadership), Wikipedia (verifiable brand entries if applicable).

FAQ

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, — questions we get

Six questions specific to this service. Longer answers on the qualifying call.

Is "GEO" different from "AEO" or "AI SEO"?

The terms are used interchangeably. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), and "AI SEO" all describe the same discipline: optimizing content for citation in AI-powered search surfaces (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT web search, Perplexity, Claude, etc.). Google's own AI Optimization Guide calls it "still SEO from Google's perspective" — meaning the fundamentals overlap heavily with classic SEO but with specific adaptations for how AI systems select and cite sources.

Should I be using llms.txt?

It's harmless to have one, but don't expect it to matter for Google. Google's own AI Optimization Guide (updated June 2026) explicitly states you do NOT need llms.txt for Google Search or its generative AI features — Google Search ignores it entirely. John Mueller called the llms.txt discovery use case "a dead end." Fine for non-Google AI systems (some independent research services parse it). We'll set it up if you want it, but we won't claim it moves your Google rankings.

How do you measure AI Overview citations?

We manually query your priority keyword list monthly in Google AI Mode + Google search (which shows AI Overviews on ~50% of queries) and document which URLs are cited. There is no GSC API for AI Overview citations yet — Google hasn't exposed that data. Third-party tools (like SE Ranking's AI tracker) exist but the coverage is spotty. Manual tracking is the reliable path today.

Can you get me cited in ChatGPT?

Directly? No — no agency can guarantee ChatGPT citation because OpenAI's selection logic isn't documented. What we can do: ensure your content structure matches ChatGPT's known citation preferences (self-contained answer blocks, entity-rich language, Wikipedia-style clarity), build your presence on ChatGPT's dominant citation sources (Wikipedia has 47.9% of citations, Reddit has 11.3%), and monitor citation frequency month-over-month.

How is GEO different from regular SEO?

Regular SEO optimizes for Google's classic ranking algorithm (position 1-10 in the blue-link results). GEO optimizes for AI selection logic which weighs different factors: front-30% direct answers, entity presence across authoritative platforms, recency (content under 3 months old is 3× more likely to be cited), multi-modal signal (text + image + video correlates with 156% higher citation rates), and passage-level extractability.

Is investing in GEO worth it right now?

Depends on your vertical. If your customers are already using ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews to research your industry, yes — you're losing traffic every month you're not cited. If your customers are still primarily searching classic Google (older demographic, offline-heavy vertical), GEO can wait 6-12 months while you nail the fundamentals. On the qualifying call we can pull real AI Overview coverage data for your priority keywords and answer this honestly.
